Welcome to my Summer Learning Series! I have created and collected learning activities to share with you that you can do right at home with your children to keep them engaged and learning over the summer. It's time to kick off summer with Memorial Day! I decided to start this series after reading a Scholastic News article with my third graders last week. The article was in the third grade Scholastic News May 15, 2017 edition Beating the Heat (http://sni.scholastic.com/SN3). It asked students to take a poll on if they thought homework should be assigned over the summer. Of course most said no, but their reasons were what filled me with joy. They said this is their time to learn what we do not learn in school- swimming, cooking, fishing, hiking, dance, riding a bike, ect. Kids do not want to stop learning and it is up to us to engage them! You are the biggest influence on your child and they will learn more from you then they ever will from me. This is why I ask you to please spend time with your children this summer exploring, learning, and having meaningful discussions. Memorial Day weekend is coming up and this is most students’ first weekend of summer break. Even if you are still in school, students are off Monday to commemorate the holiday. In my six years of teaching it always surprises me how many students do not know why we celebrate patriotic holidays such as Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day. I always make a point to take that moment to teach them about it, but this is also a wonderful learning opportunity at home as well! Students need a lot of practice to really learn something. This is why it is important that we teach about Memorial Day at home. I have put together some ideas you can use at home with your children. You can try one or two or try them all! Start off watching one of these video with your children. The first one is for younger children and the second one is for older children.
Most students I have had discussions about the military with think of soldiers as video game characters. Unless they have had family members in the military, they do not have much background knowledge on the different branches and what the military actually does. The United States military has amazing resources. Each branch, the Army, Navy, Marines, Air force, and Coast Guard each have a website that you can explore! After exploring the different branches, download the free coloring pages that include the army, navy and marine insignia. Try a Memorial Day craft! This can easily be done with red, white and blue paper, scissors, a pencil and some glue or tape. Have your child trace their hand three times on each color paper (3 white, 3 blue, 3 red). Cut out the hand prints and tape or glue them together to make a Memorial Day Wreath! Memorial Day Inspired Recipes! Try making red, white and blue fruit and angel cake kabobs! Then dip in yogurt dip. Or make a cake (any kind) and frost it white. Then decorate it with your children like the American flag! I am interested in hearing any ideas that you have. What have you tried with your children to teach and celebrate Memorial Day? I would also love to hear how it went if you try any ideas from this post! Happy Summer Learning! I tried a few of these activities with two of my tutor tots. Here are some pictures of how it turned out.
I used to be heavy into scrapbooking so we used the fancy colored paper I had left over.
